What this test checks

Load time on a phone

How long the main content takes to appear on a typical mobile connection, measured with Google's PageSpeed test.

Server response time

How long your hosting takes to start sending the page, before anything can show on screen.

Page weight and largest files

The total size of the page and the names of the biggest images and scripts, so you know exactly what to shrink.

Freezing and jumping content

Whether the page locks up while scripts load, or moves around as images arrive and makes people tap the wrong thing.

The same report also covers the rest of your homepage: speed, Google visibility, mobile experience, security and how easy it is to contact you, with a score out of 100.

Questions and answers

What is a good load time for a website?

Google recommends that the main content of a page appears within 2.5 seconds. Between 2.5 and 4 seconds needs improvement, and anything over 4 seconds is rated poor.

Why is the speed test run on a phone and not a computer?

Google judges websites by their mobile version, and phones are slower than computers with weaker connections. A site that is fast on a phone will be fast everywhere.

Why do I get a different speed result each time?

Speed depends on how busy your server and the network are at that moment, so results move a little between runs. Run the test two or three times and look at the typical result.

What usually makes a website slow?

The most common causes are large uncompressed images, too many scripts and plugins, slow hosting, and no caching. The report names the largest files on your page so you can start with those.
